Shame about the result but, wow, what a meeting we had in Sydney! Cheers Bar on George Street was the venue and they did us proud, but the biggest cheers goes to all the Villa fans that turned up, singing and carrying on like a mini Holte! Seriously, this was an amazing turnout, and for a game that was kicking off at 2am Sydney time on a Monday morning (yeah, I know it was a big one, but even so…). Previous attempts at organizing meetings have resulted in only 3 or 4 people turning up, but for this game I reckon there was more than 50. ![]() I did a rough head count in the downstairs bar while the Celtic v Rangers game was on, and came up with about 40 in Villa shirts. I reckon there was more when the game started upstairs on the big screen. The place was packed but only about 6 Manc shirts among all the Claret & Blue…..it wasn’t until they scored that I realized that all the ‘civvies’ were manure in disguise, lol. I’m not going to talk about the game in any detail. It was an enjoyable game, although maybe that was mainly down to the company. We can argue about how different it might have been if Vidic had been sent off; if Rooney hadn’t come on; if Dowd hadn’t been their twelfth man; if we had better strikers; if we had more ideas of how to change players/tactics. But the fact is we were second best all game. ![]() Nevertheless, it was a great night, and it would have been an absolutely fantastic night if we’d won. By the way, I’m taking no credit for the big turnout. Although I advertised it on this website, and also on the VillaTalk and Lions Club website message boards, it seems that it was Facebook where the message really spread. I’m not on Facebook but it seems there is a Sydney Villans group on Facebook, and it looks like that is a much better network than any website! As far as I know, Oscar, Bigron, me and my son were the only Villansworldwide members present, although I know of one guy (sorry, can’t remember his name) who said he only knew about the meeting from this website. What the heck, we were all there and that’s what matters. Unfortunately my photos have turned out crap, but Cheers Bar took some photos and will apparently be posting them on Facebook. Up The Villa. We’ve still got the FA Cup Final, haven’t we? ![]() |
