Signed from Manchester United for £400,000 in August 1989 by Graham Taylor and soon became known as GOD by the Villa faithful.

Paul won plenty of admirers for his astute defending and commitment to the team, helping Villa to the First Division runners-up spot in his first season.

The Republic of Ireland international was named PFA Player of the Year for his commanding displays at the heart of Villa's defence two years after his first season at Villa.

The following season Villa finished runners-up to Manchester United in the first ever Premiership season. Top-class performances week in and week out earned him the nickname 'GOD', which says it all.

Paul Mcgrath. Need i say more!

The greatest ever no5 for the Villa. He couldn't train regularly as his knees got so bad but that didn't stop him playing like a true genius. I can't ever see anyone playing in that role the way he did.

P.s it's good to see he's got his life back on track and has wrote a biography 'back from the brink' about his drinking days. A must for every Villa fan!!
